Weather keeps numbers down at National Juvenile Indoors

The first of three days of National Juvenile Indoor Championship action took place at AIT, Athlone last Sunday. The return of the Siberian weather conditions meant that numbers were down. That does not take from a number of good performances by Wexford athletes.

Gorey athlete Corrine Kenny, now running in the colours of DSD, was edged out of the Gold medal spot in the U17 1500m by talented Westport athlete Saoirse O’Brien. Corrine’s Silver medal winning time of 4.50.76m was just 0.72s behind Saoirse.

There were two Golds for Wexford in the Walks. Bridín Doyle of Craanford won the U14 1km Walk in 5.41.70 mins while Ciara Mooney (Adamstown AC) was 10th in the same race. Ryan Kielthy of United Striders AC won the U17 1.5km Walk (8.10.55 mins). Jack Byrne (SBR AC) was 4th in U15 1km Walk. Tríona Mooney (Adamstown AC) placed 5th in U19 1.5km Walk. Ciara Murphy (United Striders) was 7th in U15 1km Walk.

Elaine Oladiran of Enniscorthy AC won a Silver medal in U15 Shot Put (11.18m).

Orlaith Deegan (SBR AC) placed 4th in U14 High Jump. Her best of 1.45m was actually the same height as cleared by all athletes from 2nd to 10th! The places were sorted on countback.

Orlaith’s club-mate and name-sake, Orlaith Byrne, was 6th in U14 60m sprint. In U12 Boys 60m DMP’s versatile Kevin O’Mahony placed 4th in 8.57s, just 0.03 off 2nd and 3rd places!

Dannan Long (Enniscorthy AC) placed 12th in U14 High Jump.

The Indoor Champs continue next Sunday, March 25.
