Tailteann Champions: Dannan and Michael

Wexford’s two big headline-grabbing athletes at the recent Leinster Championships were Dannan Long and Michael Kent. The boys were grabbing much of the limelight again last Friday at the Tailteann Games. This popular annual event sees a selection of the best schools’ athletes in each province going head to head.

Conditions were challenging for this year’s running of the event, with rain throughout the day. That, however, was no deterrent to our two heroes.

Dannan, a pupil of FCJ Bunclody was an easy winner of the high jump with a best effort of 1.75 metres and he ran a fast 200m to get 3rd in a time of 22.58 seconds. He was selected to take the final leg of the 4 x 100m relay which he ran impressively to bring the Leinster team home in 42.70 seconds, just 0.06 off the current championship best.

Michael, a pupil at Good Counsel New Ross, won the triple jump with a massive pb of 13.34 metres. He then went on to win a closely fought pole vault competition with another pb of 3.90m.
