Successful Indoors for Wexford

A few weeks back, DMP athlete Michael Kent delivered a brilliant under 16 championship best performance in triple jump at the Leinster Indoors. Last weekend at the Irish Life Health National Juvenile Indoor Championships, he showed that regardless of whether the jumping is up-and-out or up-and-over, he is top of the class. Michael won the under 16 high jump with a best effort of 1.83 metres. He also won the pole vault with 3.40 metres.

Dannan Long of Enniscorthy, another rising star, followed up on his recent national junior high jump bronze with an under 18 gold in the same event, his winning jump being 1.75 metres. He also won a silver in a competitive 200 metres race in a time of 22.55 seconds.

Adamstown’s Ciara Mooney, who narrowly missed out on a medal at the national juniors, won the under 18 1500 metres walk (7.37.28 minutes).

Wexford athlete Cara Morrissey competing for Carlow club SLOT won the under 16 pole vault (2.70 metres).

Ava Wilson (Bree) won a silver medal in under 12 high jump (1.35 metres) and placed 4th in long jump (3.88 metres). Sarah O’Brien got another medal for the club, winning the under 13 high jump (1.40 metres). Orlaith Byrne (SBR) was 4th in under 18 high jump (1.50 metres).

Rachel Gregg (DMP) was 5th in under 19 long jump (4.89 metres). A younger member of the club, Judy Sinnott, was 5th in under 12 long jump (4.29 metres). Artem Kelly (St Paul’s) placed 10th in under 14 long jump and 6th in shot put. Bobby O’Shea of Adamstown was 9th in under 12 shot.

Other Wexford placings:

Cara Kelly (DMP) was 4th in her under 17 400 metres heat and 5th in the final (60.74s). Liam Berry (Menapians) qualified for the final of the under 19 400 metres but did not line out.

Orlaith Byrne (SBR) placed 3rd in her heat of under 18 60 metres, and 7th in the final (8.07s).

Jayden Kenny (Bree) was 2nd in the heat of under 14 60 metres hurdles and 5th in the final. Clubmate Lea Bolger was 6th in her heat of under 14 hurdles race. And a third Bree athlete, Kiera Wilson, would have been hoping to make an impression in under 15 hurdles. That was before she had a disagreement with one of the hurdles in her qualifying heat and hit the deck.
