Wexford Athletic began its 2022 T&F Championships on Friday, May 6 with an evening of throws and jumps at the DMP AC grounds at Sinnottstown Lane, Wexford. With events for both underage and senior athletes, the very tight programme was made up of just four disciplines: hammer, discus, long jump and high jump. An interesting feature of the evening, and one of the reasons it is such a popular season-opener, is that many of the older teenagers get to compete in their age group as well as at senior level. Underage championship action continued the following Sunday at a gloriously sunny Enniscorthy Sports Hub with a jam-packed programme of events at the first of two days of the Mr Oil Wexford Juvenile T&F Championships. The day started with competitions for the under 9s, going right up through the ages … and testing the stamina of mums and dads! The championships concluded last Sunday, May 15, at the same venue. Both days provided a feast of entertaining high-quality athletics with an abundance of very hard fought competitions, close finishes and even a few virtuoso performances.
Quite a number of our juvenile athletes have qualified for this week’s Leinster Schools Championships and will be hoping to progress to the All-Ireland Schools on June 4. We wish them every success.
