Mr. Oil Wexford Intermediate Road Race 2021

Slaney Olympic Athletics Club hosted another successful evening of championship road running in Enniscorthy last Friday with the Mr Oil Wexford Intermediate road races for men and women. Conditions were ideal for fast running and the quality of both races was top notch.

Croghan’s Sandra Bernie was a stylish winner of the women’s 4km race with the runner up spot going to Sharon Kehoe of United Striders (US), back in action following a long break from the sport. Emma Owens of St Paul’s AC, winner of the previous weekend’s novice race, took the bronze. A top 10 finish for Sandra Young (US) and good placings by clubmates Alison Bennett and Aine Cullen secured gold team medals for Striders ahead of Croghan in second and SBR 3rd.

In the men’s 8km race, Liam Collins of DMP went one better than his silver in the Novice to take the Intermediate title. Runner-up Scott James (US) also improved one place on his placing in the Novice. Scott put in a late rally and was gaining on Liam, but the Wexford man held off his challenge to win by five seconds. Novice champion Seán Crotty, Slaney Olympic, finished strongly to take the bronze. Striders had five athletes in the top seven which meant that team gold was never going any where other than to New Ross. Slaney Olympic took silver and SBR bronze.
