Wexford struck silver twice last weekend at the Leinster Juvenile Cross Country Relays in Dunboyne.DMP has a talented bunch of young ladies at under 16 level, all having competed strongly in the cross country season to date. No doubt coach John Joe Doyle has had something to do with that. Lucia Goggins ran a brilliant first of the four 500 metre legs, passing the baton to Maria Coone who then passed to Éabha Keane. At this stage, the team looked good for a podium place; but what colour would the medals be? Aoife Walsh set off like a bat out of Wuhan on the final leg. Approaching the finish she was about to sweep past the Ratoath athlete into the gold medal position when she hit the deck. Ratoath held on for gold, while the DMP girls took the silver … and played their part in serving up the most exciting finish of the day. This was a great performance by the girls and just reward for all their hard work. Expect to hear lots more about them in the future.
The under 16 United Striders team competed over the same distances as the girls. We are awaiting details but we can tell you that, as with the DMP girls, there was a tight finish and that they finished in the silver medal position. Well done to Olan Delaney, Joss O’Connor, Eoin Hannan, DJ Dempsey and Max Murphy.
